Inmigration Debate

With the upcoming elections, I'm sure that the topic of "illegal immigration" will be raised again. And sadly the target for the subject will be the Mexican nationals. Beginning with the term "illegal", it's really undocumented. If the people that saw them as a threat would just step back for a moment an really analyze the situation, frictions and confrontations among groups could be avoided. The undocumented migrants are not all Mexicans to begin with. They come from all sorts of countries. But let's focus on them for just a moment. They go through pain and hardships - besides risking their lives- to come up to the US to do what? To work. They leave family (wifes, sons, daughters, etc) and friends behind for extended periods of time. Again, they want to work, why? Because they have a family to support. They must work. So really they are part of the solution. They work jobs where you and me wouldn't see ourselves doing. They fill a void in this society. But the anti-immigrant factions will tell you that it must be stopped. The homeland must be protected (where else have we heard such language before?). Terrorists are going to infiltrate through our southern border so we must build a fence to keep them all out. Um como se dice "Canada"? Or what terrorists only have one choice for crossing the border?

We need to set our fears aside and come all together and talk as a single nation. The nation that we are. We need to be honest with ourselves and be critical at the same time.

Enough rant.

Cheers,

Ben
