Throughout my own spiritual journey I've been on both sides of the spectrum. I originally inherited the values that my Mom followed (Catholicism). We grew up reading the bible on the way to school but only went to Church on those special holidays. We prayed and commended our souls to God and did the cross sign thing, ya'know north-south, east-west. But I don't think we ever really understood what we were doing. I mean we knew the history and the parables but never delve any deeper than the surface. There's another thing that sticks out in my memories. It's customary in Mexico (just as in the US) that kids get gifts from Santa Claus. But in our house it was baby Jesus whom we received presents from. Again, never really thought about that that much. As I grew up and went to mass every now and then, I remember developing a feeling of guilt. I couldn't participate in the communion because I hadn't confessed my sins prior to mass. I remember feeling left out... and guilty! I struggled with that because I wanted to be good to His eyes but I wasn't allowed. I didn't understand how is it that 'confessing all my sins' to who I thought was a regular man, someone with no more 'powers' than me, could free me up from my sins. Looking back, all this was the precursor of what the next chapter of my spiritual life would be.
Cheers,
Ben
